Saga pedo Pallas, 1771 Presence 3 grid squares (0.8 %). Description Body: 60 to 112 mm (ovipositor even in females). Very long body. Subgenital plate in the female triangular with a small incision in the apex. Tegmina of the males very short, reduced to stridulatory organs, in contrast, the females do not have tegmina. Very long ovipositor, denticulate in the apical region. The anterior and median tibiae and femurs have teeth on the lower part to catch insects on which they feed. Ecology Present in: siliceous rockrose scrub and heath and brambles. Has been found above 70 m (Delfià, Alt Empordà, UTM: 31TEG08) up to 1065 m (El Mascar, Tortosa, UTM: 31TBF72). It is a parthenogenetic species. In Catalonia, at present, we know of no male specimen. It has been found in the regurgitations of lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) in the Empordà. In France, it has also been found in the regurgitations of the lesser kestrel and the common kestrel. Distribution Empordà plains and southern tip of the Coastal mountain system. Europe and Asia. Status Legally protected species in France. In danger of extinction in Switzerland. Very rare species. Saga pedo (Pallas, 1771) The matriarchal katydid : The only North American species in this subfamily is Saga pedo, a recent introduction from Europe.
Identification : Forelegs adapted for holding prey; rows of strong spines along inside and outside lower edges of femur and tibia. No males; females large and wingless. Known only from Jackson County, Michigan. Length 60-65 mm.
Habitat : Old fields.
Season : August and September. Eggs apparently require more than one winter to hatch.
Remarks : A reasonable hypothesis as to how the matriarchal katydid was brought to Michigan is that one or more of its eggs were in soil adhering to farm equipment returning from plowing contests in Italy. The first Michigan specimen was collected in 1970 and only six have been taken since. Unlike our native katydids and other species of Saga in Europe, the matriarchal katydid is obligatorily parthenogenetic. No males are known from here or from Europe. Even though there is no male calling song, females have prominent tympanal organs on the fore tibiae. A caged female captured and avidly ate grasshoppers. She inserted eggs in soil to a depth of about 25 mm.
